I have compared several schools before my decision. I want to learn Chinese well and I also like to know Chinese culture. And I think the attitude of the teacher, the consultant here are all very positive. I like to stay with them and get the care from th
In music we have a class called Ear training. I was never very good at it as I was never trained in it.
LikewiseI gave up trying to concentrate on tones to speak Chinese. I have less of an accent than lots of
foreigners but I use a different concept concerning the tones as I do in music. Ear training doesn’t make
you necessarily a better musician but it is a useful skill. Now that I don’t have to learn it for any reason other
than my own personal fulfillment I started studying it again. The catch is I started studying it in Mandarin. It
is a skill like riding a bicycle.
I had a block against it. It is the ability to hear something and write down what you hear. The tones in
Chinese are identical. For that matter in all languages. If the tones are wrong we have trouble understanding
the language.
This is quite apparent when you call for support in the USA you get connected to someone in India who
speaks perfect English but you can’t understand a word as the tones are wrong. In Spain you get connected to
someone in Bolivia or Equator and even the Spaniards can’t understand it due to the tones. China also is like
that. If your tones are wrong people will understand only after they get used to your accent. I just started studying
tones I’m amazed after a couple of days I can get most of them correctly because I changed my attitude to learning
the tones. If you separate the idea and just develop the ability to hear which tone is being used, it becomes easy.
There are only 5 tones. Officially there are 4 and a neutral tone. Try having a teacher or an internet program where
you listen to the tone and write it down. You will be able to conquer this very quickly and increase your mandarin
ability by leaps and bound over night .
