The Chinese idiom or cheng yu is always difficult for foreigners to know when to use them. There are
thousands of Cheng yus. A chengyu is a four letter saying normally referring to a story. There are so many
I have just picked a couple of common ones to talk about. In English we have just as many but we don’t
seem to make such an issue out of it. Gua Mu Xiang Kan is a very common cheng yu. It means to see
things in a different light or to treat someone with increased respect. Literally it means to wipe your eyes
and look again. I found the trick for memorizing a change yu is to memorize a whole sentence that it is
used in. Here are a couple to add to you vocabulary.
