自2004年中国国家汉办在国外开办孔子学院和孔子课堂以来,外国人学习汉语的热潮不断升温。目前,美国有70所孔子学院,仅中国驻洛杉矶总领事馆所辖领区就有6所。除公立学校外,许多特许学校和私立学校也希望引进汉语教学,以满足当地人掌握汉语和了解中国文化的需要。
两年前,南加州圣迭戈市巴纳德小学濒临倒闭,在校学生不足100人。新任校长爱德华 朴调研后决定通过开办汉语课程使该校“起死回生”。打出汉语教学的招牌后,该校不仅抑制住学生的流失,而且扩大了生源,吸引到许多优秀师资,教学质量得到迅速提升。今年该校被加州教育机构评为优秀学校,成为众多学校竞相学习的榜样。
汉语和中华文化之所以能吸引美国人,除了因为中国悠久的文化和灿烂的历史,同样重要的是,中国改革开放30年来经济迅速发展、综合国力提升,由此创造了巨大市场,同时提供了众多的就业机会。很多人认为,掌握汉语和了解中华文化可以帮助其从中国获得更多机会,还可以从东亚和东南亚长期受汉字文化影响的国家获得更多机会,这些都带来了对汉语和中华文化的强劲需求。
一名6年级的美国小学生表示,他已经掌握了英语和西班牙语,现在正努力学习汉语,长大后他可以凭借掌握3种世界主要语言的优势找到理想的工作。
美国加州地区的汉语教学原本局限于公立学校和华裔集中的学校。但近年来随着汉语热不断升温,一些面向富裕家庭的私立学校应学生及其家长的要求也开始增设汉语课。
此外,汉语教学的扩大与来自传统中文学校和美国各级学校的努力分不开。在孔子学院和孔子课堂成立之前,已经存在许多周末开课的中文学校,其作用现在仍然得到发挥。美国大、中、小学视自身条件主动开展汉语教学,同样功不可没。
针对一些人所谓中国不仅向美国输出商品,还单方面输出文化的说法,中国驻洛杉矶总领事馆教育参赞陈准民指出,事实并非如此。首先是美国社会有需求,然后才出现开设汉语课来满足这些需求的结果。他强调,“如果没有需求,再怎么推广也是白费力”。
