现年57岁的美国人迈克尔·罗默此前从未在国外生活过。不过，2010年，罗默带着妻子和两个孩子来到了成都，在这个中国西部城市度过了一年时间。罗默租掉加利福尼亚州的住所，带家人一起到成都的目标很明确：让两个孩子艾琳和康纳能更多了解中国，并学会中文。“会说中文很重要，”罗默认为，中文已经成为一种必须掌握的语言。
在美国等西方国家，向罗默这样的人很多。许多家长意识到了中国不断提升的国际影响力，不遗余力地希望他们的孩子能够掌握中文，以便今后与中国13亿人能够顺利沟通。美国《华尔街日报》指出，这种情况在20世纪80年代曾经发生过，当时日本经济蓬勃增长，许多西方人竞相学习日语。
不过，学中文的浪潮更加“汹涌”。 《华尔街日报》称，从美国最西部的加州到最东部的缅因州，几乎所有地方都有家长让孩子参加各种中文学习班，一些家长还聘请家庭教师、让孩子通过网络电话与中国教师交流，甚至雇佣会说中文的保姆。还有家长在孩子的游戏室内播放中文配音的迪斯尼动画片，或者在iPhone上安装学习中文的应用程序。有条件的家长，更是像罗默那样直接带着孩子来到中国居住一段时间。
罗默认为，学习中文让“孩子的自信心更加强大，同时也对头脑发育很有好处”。不过，他也承认，孩子们一开始进入中国学校读书时的困难，也一度让他感到压力很大。然而，回到美国后，罗默的两个孩子都十分珍惜在中国学习中文的那一年。 11岁的康纳说，他喜欢在不愿意被别人知道自己想说些什么的时候换用另一种语言。“我爸爸的中文没我们厉害，所以当我们要讨论送他的生日礼物时就可以用中文。 ”
猎头公司指出，会说中文让应征者拥有很大的竞争优势。洛杉矶一家猎头公司的副总裁迈克尔·迪斯泰法诺说：“在美国会说流利中文的人不多，因此如果你拥有这一特长，毫无疑问就会具备更大的竞争力。”迪斯泰法诺的儿子正在高中学习中文，甚至计划毕业后到亚洲工作。
