I had a wonderful teacher once who used a very funny technic to understand Chinese Grammar.
It is important to understand as due to this different concept many mistakes can be made in translation.
The teacher showed us a little plastic square box that had a yellow lid. He asked us to describe the
item without telling us what it was. It was clear plastic, It was square, it had a little plunger inside of it.
We had no idea what it was!! It was a little box to put a hard-boiled egg into to make it square so
it wouldn’t roll off a plate for entertaining!
We were perfectly able to describe the item without knowing what it was or what it was for. Chinese
grammar is very similar. The time place and purpose are in front of the verb. If you have to think of the
concept it is very slow. It is easiest to memorize a whole sentence that you can plug your idea into rather than
piece together all that information in front of the verb!
Once the concept is understood, the grammar is very simple.
