Every Sunday I used to take the south ferry from Manhattan to Staten Island. I had relatives or kind of relatives who lived there. It was customary for families to take in young girls to help with raising the children. In exchange they would take care of the young girl and give her an education. The girls were basically unofficially adopted into the family. Such a girl helped raise my father thus the two families were united. Her daughter lived in Staten Island. I had a scholarship to go the Mannes College of music which was the only college in all of the United States that had a guitar department. I was only sixteen which was really too young to be on my own. I had studied Ballet as a small child but liked it. The daughter of my father’s adopted sister was a ballet dancer. Every Sunday I took the Ferry to Staten Island to take ballet classes. While on the ferry I always ordered a blue berry muffin. Blue Berry muffins are a sweet cake like cupcake with blue berries in it. It is a very American dish. The blue berry muffins on the Ferry were huge with huge blue berries mixed into them. The Ferry took 20 minutes to cross the harbor. I get there by 10 am for our home ballet classes. The view was always beautiful as I would ride the ferry and eat my blue berry muffin with a view of the Statue of Liberty in the New York Harbor.
