While entertaining for the US consulate General I had to come up with dishes that didn’t need a knife to cut anything as I was serving buffet style. Lots of people would sit on chairs without a table which eliminated the embarrassment of not knowing how to use a knife and fork. I had learned to cook from the old Time life cook books. As A child I helped take care of my little sisters while my oldest sister helped my mother in the kitchen. When I got married we moved to Ohio were I didn’t know anyone so I had to learn the hard way by making millions of mistakes. The time life series were very explicit so little by little I got my cooking chops down. Every time I made a big mistake I invited my husband’s students over to eat as they didn’t care what I served; they were jus hungry and ate everything in sight. I didn’t know for example that the meat in a stew needed to be sautéed first or everything just disintegrate into a big mush. I had many experiences of trying to make bread and not following the recipes exactly. The bread would explode in the oven or come out like a brick. After much trial and error and a patient husband I learned the art of cooking.
