In Spain the children are given wine with the meal mixed with water or sweet soda called Casera. They are taught to
how to handle alcohol at home. Consequently as adults drinking wine with a meal is just something everyone does. The
first time I came to study in Spain I went to Santiago de Composetela in Galicia. There everyone drank wine. I wasn’t too
experienced as we didn’t drink wine at home in the USA. We were a lot of students from all over the world. After class we
would go to the bars to have a drink which came with some of the freshest seafood in the world. We all given a white ceramic
cup filled with a wonderful white wine. It was so fresh it wasn’t clear. It was almost a muddy yellow color. With it came clams
and something called percebes. Percebes are little clams with more leg than clam. Today they are such a delicacy no one
can afford to eat them. When I used to eat them they were so plentiful we were served them every day. Due to that experience
in Santiago de Compostela where St James is buried I developed a taste for very light white wine. Years have gone by and once
again I have acquired a taste for this white wine. Unknowingly I picked the same white wine I drank as a young adult in Galicia
but the name has changed. It is now called Alberino. It is a hit worldwide even in Shanghai .
