On the East Coast near Washington DC it is a tradition to go crabbing for blue point
crabs. Most of the crabbing is done in brackish water. Brackish water is when a river meets
with salt water. It was a family tradition to go crabbing once a year. We would get up at 3
AM and drive 2 hours to get to the Y River so we could start crabbing at dawn. We would
crab by tying q piece of chicken to a string and hanging it over the edge of a boat. You had
to be very quiet not to scare the crabs away. When the string vibrated you had to slowly bring
it up until you could see the crab. When the crab was in view, my father would take a net with
a long handle and scoop up the crab and flip it into the boat. Then we would use long prongs
to put them into a basket with a lid. This process would take all day until we had one bushel
of crabs to take home to eat. As my little sister was learning to speak where 3 languages were
spoken around her on the island of Ibiza she didn’t speak at all until she was quite a bit older.
Once we returned to the States, she finally started speaking and has never stopped since.
The last time we went crabbing she was in my boat. We couldn’t catch a thing because she
wouldn’t shut up. We finally passed her off to my older sister’s boat and we began catching
crabs but my sister and her husband caught none as my little sister wouldn’t stop talking. Since
no one was consistent when speaking to my little sister as a child, she just didn’t speak. This
is an example of the need to be consistent when learning new languages. In correct learning
can cause problems like not being able to catch a crab .
