There was a picture this morning of an ostrich running down the street in the
Chaoyang district of Beijing. It had been frightened by the noise and took off
from an ostrich farm. In the late 1990 it was also popular in Spain or at least
until people tried. Ostrich farms sprung up all over Spain. People were selling
ostrich eggs and ostrich omelets as well as ostrich meat. The stable where I
kept my horse was owned by a butcher. I kept my young colt in a stall that
he could be let out to walk around easily. He wasn’t trained yet and had just
come from a large ranch in the west. I went to his stall and opened the door.
Instead of beautiful little horses a big ostrich stuck out his head from the stall
and before I knew it he jumped out of the stall and was running around the
stable between the stalls. We all got long lounging whips and herded him back
into the stall I must admit it was a bit frightening as they are very big and tall.
The Next day when arrived, the ostrich was hanging upside down in the wash
stall. He had been butchered to be turned into ostrich steaks. The third day we
were all invited to an ostrich dinner. There was so little meat on the ostrich that
the ostrich fad disappeared over night. I see from the news now the ostrich
breeders are trying a new market, China. I’m sure it will be short lived as it was
in Spain.
