In China there is a wonderful custom of picking your own combinations of food to be cooked or grilled. Walking in
the streets you can see little restaurants with a glass show case of fresh vegetables and meats. You pick it out yourself
or you tell the waiter which ones you want. After you choose your combination they will make a soup out of it or stir fry it.
Then you add whatever combination of sauces you so desire. These restaurants are all over, most are inexpensive and
most have very fresh ingredients. While I was in School in Li Jiang learning to read and write, the director introduced to
me to a whole series of these little restaurants. I chose one that had 6 tiny little tables with tiny little chairs. The show case
served as a separation between the kitchen and dining room. I would eat there every evening around 6 o’clock. In China
everyone does things in groups. This little restaurant where all the women were six feet tall accommodated me. They put
me to eat with the children. After I had picked out what I wanted to eat I would sit at this little table with the two Naxi children
and we would practice writing Chinese Characters. Many Chinese women don’t drink but I had a very light beer with the meal.
Not to drink alone they sent the grandmother to sit with me. It was not only fun to be part of the family but it was a good way to
learn. When in China pick you own eatery and enjoy the food and the company .
