I know in China it is an honor to be served turtle and also and
art to eat one but this time a tortoise came to dinner. In Spain
to keep the mice and rats away it is a custom to have a tortoise
around. For some reason it keeps the varmints away. I was being
interviewed for a TV special. First we went and saw my horses who
are bi lingual. Then we went to an Old Spanish Hacienda to film
me playing the guitar and we finished up the program with a bit
to eat in the patio of La Bodega del Herrador. It is a little tiny
restaurant hotel in a little village on the Spanish Portuguese border.
There wet me the tortoise.Just as the television crew was taking
all the equipment into the patio, the tortoise appeared. He knew
this was not a usual situation. He appeared for a second then hid
in the plants. This patio is where he lives; his job is to keep mice
and rats away. He is very good at his job. The patio is full of orange
trees and old olive trees. The Television crew set up the cameras and
we rehearsed our scenes. The young lady named Ana Pecos is a professional
actress and director. She specializes in spontaneity. As she is very
enthusiastic her speech is very lively. We were just starting to film
and the turtle was so curious he came into the middle of the filming
to see what was going on. He stuck his head out to take a look around.
We were talking, drinking and eating Spanish tapas. They interviewed
me as they had heard an interview I did on the radio about flying
horses to China. The interview was so interesting, the tortoise also
came. He stuck his head out of his shell, looked up and stared at the
camera men. That was what caught his attention. After his curiosity was
satisfied,he did an about face and we lost him in the garden.
