I have compared several schools before my decision. I want to learn Chinese well and I also like to know Chinese culture. And I think the attitude of the teacher, the consultant here are all very positive. I like to stay with them and get the care from th
When I first got to New York I went to a concert where a little 5 year old child
was sitting on a table playing a Bach cello suite on a violin turned into a mini Cello.
10 years later I met the Child now 15 at the Marlboro music festival. It was Yo
Yo Ma; the famous Chinese American Cellist. Most Marlboro musicians stuck up
their noses at the classical guitar but Yo Yo didn’t. He came into the studio where
I was practicing and asked all kinds of questions as we were both practicing the
same Bach suite. I played it on the classical guitar and he played it on the cello.
My late husband was also a cellist and Yo Yo attended some of his classes. This
was one of the first times Yo Yo was without his parents. Having been overly
restricted as a child he was really breaking out and as a consequence playing better
than ever. Today Yo Yo Ma is one of the top Chinese musicians in the world. I’ve
not seen him since we were all at the Marlboro festival. The last time I saw him in
person, we had a lemon meringue pie fight in the Marlboro cafeteria. There was
another cellist, Jeffrey Solow who was also in the pie fight and is a well respected
chamber musician in Philadelphia. I’m sure it was the lemon meringue pie smeared
from ear to ear and everywhere else that made Yoyo such a great cellist.
