Man Chi- Eat Slowly

An expression in China that is hard for Americans to get use to is eat slowly, Man Chi.

In Spain when once sees some one eating they say Buen provecho. Take advantage of

what you are eating or in France it is, Bon Apetit- good appetite. In China they say Man

Chi. Eat slowly. In English we don’t have an equivalent. When leaving the table or the

restaurant or cafeteria it is polite in China to say Man Chi as you are leaving. It is also

polite to say Man zou after you have said good bye in China. It is an expression of concern.

To do things slowly is to do things thoroughly. It is contrary to our western modern

thinking where we want to do things fast. In actuality to do things slowly and well is a good

lesson to learn. In playing music when we have to do a fast passage a technique for making

notes come out well and clean is to remind you self to go slowly instead of fast. This is

particularly true doing a live performance. Remember the man or slow in China means to

do things thoroughly and also is an expression of concern.
