In western society we drink a little bit of wine or beer with a toast
or whenever we feel like it. In China one never drinks alone. If you
want to drink a little you must toast someone or everyone for each sip
of your drink. To most westerners this is an uncomfortable habit but it
does make for a happier table. To add to this a host may want you to
Ganbei or dry your glass which means bottoms up. I was in Amsterdam with
a Chinese politician who had lived and traveled overseas. He took me aside
and said as you are a foreigner you probably aren’t accustomed to our way
of doing things. He told me as he was the guest; it was his obligation to
get drunk. The host had all the people at the table toast the politician.
The host appointed one of his employees to drink for him. The evening proceeded
with each person at the table continually toasting the invited guest until
he could no longer walk without help. In most of our western societies it
is a loss of face to get really drunk. One is supposed to know how not to
drink too much. But in this upper class society it was just the opposite.
Be prepared to learn to say Ni ganbei, wo sui yi if you don’t want to get drunk!!
