Ay yin was my maid In Kaohsiung and my husband was
the director of AIT Kaohsiung at the time. Ay yin
was very proud that her son had gotten through university
and was now taking his final exams. She was very
concerned that he wouldn’t pass. She took a roast
Chicken to the temple as an offering to Buddha so
that Buddha might help him pass the exams. It was
customary that once a fly landed on the food you could
take it back and eat it. The fly represented a ghost or
god who ate the chicken. She went to the temple very
early before the flies were out. As there were no flies
she left the chicken there in the hot sun all day until
she came home from work. She finished work around 3.30
and went to the temple to pick up the chicken. We had a
California delegation that night representing the wineries
of San Francisco. We often split the cooking. I would do
what I could do best and she did what she did best.
For example she made the pie crusts and I made the fillings
and so on. As I was accompanying the delegation the whole
day I had gotten up and done my half before I left. She was
waiting to do her half in the evening. After she picked up
the chicken from the temple she ate some of it. As it was
sitting in the sun all day long it had gone bad of course.
She got really sick and couldn’t finish her half of all
the dishes. We couldn’t call someone in to complete the
other half of the dishes as they didn’t know American recipes.
She found a friend that had a set meal that she whipped up
quickly for the delegation. It never occurred to Ay yin that
a chicken in the temple could go bad!! Her son did pass the
exams. It was all a happy ending except for poor sick Ay yin!
