Before my Chinese friends come to town, I try to train the local restaurants and bars not to be shocked by their requests. Sometimes it is so simple that the restaurant can’t do it. The best example of this is asking for a cup of hot water. In China this is the most common drink. The Chinese always ask for hot water. As this is not a western custom, it can be difficult to get a waiter to give you a glass of hot water. My Chinese friends all say it makes their stomach feel comfortable to drink hot water. I have developed lots of ways to ask for hot water as the direct way doesn’t seem to work. Sometimes I say, “Would you please bring a cup of tea without the tea bag”, or (I just learned a new way that has been working pretty well),”Please bring a cup of hot water for my friend ‘He has to take some medicine to be dissolved in Hot water. All Chinese hotels have a tea pot to boil water in the room. It is expected that every hotel big or small will have an electric pot to boil water. When we take them to our western hotels it is a shock as there are none. It is easiest knowing the cultural difference exist to always have a spare hot water boiling pot to make your friends feel comfortable.
