While living outside of China it is always difficult to think how to keep up my mandarin and how to improve. I started using a series on CCTV TV news that is exactly what I need to improve my Chinese. The beauty of it is that it is a series that is using all the words I already know but the words are used in a different manner than I have seen in the text books. The lesson I studied today was a verb pattern using the word Hao. Hao is one of the first words everyone learns when studying Chinese. The verb pattern is V + V+ keshi or danshi. Here is an example; Zhe jian yifu hao shi hao keshi tai gui le. This clothing is good but it is too expensive. Here is another example. Zhong guo cai wo hui zuo shi hui zuo danshi shui ping bu tai gao. I can make Chinese food but the level isn’t very high. These are all words most of us learn in the first few months of Chinese but we don’t learn these sentence patterns that really separate the fluent speakers from the beginner. I highly recommend adding this free series to your language learning. This series is called Travel. If it is too high a level I recommend the series called growing up with Chinese. All these series are put together by Beijing University and are available on the CCTV News sight in English of course!
