As all is too technical today many people experience a lot of loneliness. In my generation we were not spectators we were participators This information comes from psychologists who study human behavior for advertizing. My generation doesn’t like to watch a game on television as we like to play it ourselves. My little sister’s generation was just the opposite. They liked to observe and if they had to do anything you would loose your audience. Today things have become so technical what succeeds is personal contact. How does one use this in business or anything else? One way is to create activities that people can share and discuss the issues of today. The other way is to ask people to do something that makes them feel important without being too much of a burden. It might be a little thing that you have a gathering and ask one of the participants to greet everyone as they come in to show them where to put their coats or where to sit or have a cup of coffee or tea. Basically appoint someone to be a hostess. Two thinkgs happen. The individual then gets to meet everyone personally and it serves to make the guests feel welcome. It is the ideal way to network. The US Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai has put this theory to work extremely well. Last year a new director came in and the activities he has organized has made it a spectacular organization because he has used all of these techniques. There are small meeting with six people or so, social meeting, large meetings with major officials from both countries and he also has many education venues. We can use it as model for all of our own businesses to succeed in todays changing world.
