As Cuba is in the news we are seeing lots of positive things about Cuba. There are also lots of stories that our American politicians have gotten backwards. Living in Spain where there has always been an open relationship with Cuba we hear a lot of news about Cuba. The top ballet dancers in the ballet companies in the United States are Cubans. Cuba has always had a very high level in the arts. Many of the top athletes in the United States are Cubans. Certainly our top classical guitarists in America are Cubans. Living in Spain we also hear that many of the medicines developed in Cuba for curing diseases are superior to our American culture. By not having free trade it has been hard for Cuba to develop economically. I heard an interview on Spanish Television with Fidel Castro saying that his economic policy didn’t work. He wanted to do something similar to China that would incorporate the two worlds under one roof. Even before Castro my grandfather used to teach dentistry in Cuba. At that time things were a bit difficult as there were so many murders. I always remember him telling the story that each dental student had a real head to learn how to be a dentist. He said he entered a laboratory where all the heads were floating in a big vat of formaldehyde. It was obvious something had to be done! Perhaps now Cuba will be able to come into its own.
