What I recommend is signing up for an on line TEFL(Teaching English as a Foreign Language) course while studying Mandarin in Shanghai. Normally the courses either on line or at the TEFL Institute in Shanghai are a month long. With the Certificate of TEFL one can earn a reasonable living in China and subsidize the study of Mandarin. Most English teaching jobs offer lodging also. One can live very comfortably on a 10000 us a month and also save a 1000 a month. Another option is just go to Shanghai for a month at Mandarin Garden and study Chinese and complete the one line TEFL at the same time. It gives one a head start to working in China. With the certificate it is very easy to find work and subsidize your own study of Mandarin. Mandarin Garden is a school that specializes in teaching teachers to teach Mandarin. They not only teach mandarin to the Chinese but also to foreigners. They have schools or branches all over China. One could easily go to three different branches to get a feel for China while at the same time doing the TEFL certificate. I myself am thinking of doing just that!
