The pipa is often called a Chinese guitar or lute. It is tuned like the guitars or lutes of the 16th century. Originally it was held horizontally like a guitar but little by little it became to be held upright. In the guitar world particularly in the Flamenco world, where they use a lot of right hand strumming, the guitar also starts to be held upright. It makes the right had technique of raqueado or strumming easier. The pipa uses something called a lunzi or wheel. It is a continuous sound or tremolo using the back of the nails. It is similar to the rasqueado of flamenco but more precise. Originally reading music in Chinese is extremely difficult as each note in each octave has a different character. The Japanese develop a system of writing music which is very popular today in teaching Chinese instruments called jian pu, or simplified music notation. The jazz musicians in America call it a moveable do or tonic. It is a good system to change music and put it in any key. If it is a complicated piece as are many of the pipa master works it is not suitable for changing keys. The mastery of the pipa again is similar to our baroque music where ornamentation was added as desired. With pipa it is the same thing. You can bend a note or add a little tremolo or lunzi to spice up the music. The great artists know just how much to put in to the music. It is similar to being a good cook. Too much salt can spoil the pot. While in China. I highly recommend learning to play one of the Chinese tradition instruments to absorb the Culture. My favorite is the pipa!DN4Learn chinese in shanghai,Learn mandarin, Mandaringarden
