While I was in Venezuela I was asked to translate for the horse council in Virginia. As I’m a horseman it means the translations are better than the usual translator who didn’t have horse vocabulary of knowledge. I got hit with something I never expected. There is a lot of illiteracy in Venezuela. We visited a farm that not only had horses but huge Brahman bulls. They were so big that standing up they were six feet tall at the shoulder. The equine vet who was showing the horses got an emergency call. The bull was so big and clumsy while getting up he had stepped on his penis and torn his scrotum. We rushed over to the bull farm. While the veterinarian was sewing up the bull, the owner of the farm proudly gave us a tour. As Venezuela is a tropical climate they had imported bulls from the orient that could with stand the tropical heat. They were using artificial insemination to breed. They had four big containers of frozen semen. The workers were illiterate. They had trouble as the workers kept mixing up which cow went with which bull. Normally in breeding you try to compensate the weaknesses of each species and put the characteristics together to enhance the off spring. The owner showed up the containers of semen. They were dyed different colors. They had yellow semen, red semen and blue semen. The owner who lived in the city would call his farm and tell the workers to inseminate a cow with red semen for example because the worker couldn’t read. It was an ingenious was to overcome Illiteracy!
