I went to play in the little country of Suriname. It was a Dutch Colony at the time and like a peter seller’s movie of incompetence. The US government had put a Chinese Dutch doctor in as president. I had an accident and my fingers were cut off. Fortunately one of the best hand surgeons in the world had just returned from Venezuela and put me back together literally. I thought I would never play guitar again. Playing guitar was like the physical therapy one needed to do to recuperate the feeling in my two fingers of my left hand. I first decided that I could just do simple accompaniment and perhaps nothing else. My husband picked Surinam for my first performances after the accident. There was a US Embassy worker who I will never forget be he taught me one of the most important things in my life. Intention is everything. I explained I was concerned that my playing was not up to par caused by the accident. He kept saying intention is everything. I was very successful in that little country in 1980. I learned that if you give your all people realize it and appreciate it. Since that time I’ve always given my all to everything. It has made me very successful. Paul who I only met for a few days gave me one of the most useful lessons in my life.
