My husbnd had just won the internationally Tchaikovsdy competition in Russia. He was the first American to win anything as it was during the cold war. His High school friend was Toby Friendlander. Toby’s father was a wonderful artist. He did a woodcarving of my husband playing the cello. It was great. Is was so wonderful I decided to make a poster of it to advertize my husbands concerts. My husband introduced Toby to her present husband who is the great violinist Itzak Pearlan. Itzak was not popular as a young man as he was handicapped. My husband Steve Kates took it upon himself to break the ground with the other young musians as Itzak was so good. They formed a quartet with Pinchus Zuckerman Steve Clapp Itzak perlan and my husband Stephen Kates. They were in High school at the time at the famous school of performing Arts. As Steve was close with Itzak he arranged the meeting between toby and Izak. They got married and Steve was best man at their wedding. The wonderful wood cut of Steve playing the cello made by the artist Friedlander who was Toby’s father was just plain great . After I made a poster of it we put it around where ever my husband was performing to advertize the concert like the date and time etc. I hadn’t figured on one thing. The poster was so great everyone stole it. I would put it in the supper markets and it didn’t last more than 15 minutes before someone stole it. I put it in the libraries and the same thing happened. I accomplished the fact that everyone liked it but if the poster was stolen how would other people know when and where the performance was to take place? Toby’s art was different than her father. She took good care of Itzak perlamn and helped give him the support system that is necessary to be a great artist. Art ran in the family!
