We can’t carry knifes on planes any more nor can we carry things like a cork screw. It is increasingly a problem for international travels if they decide to buy a bottle of wine for the room. Very often there isn’t a cork screw in the hotel room. The First time I saw someone open a bottle of wine without a cork screw was in the Medina in Tangiers. We had taken a Yugoslav freighter from New York to Tangiers via Casablanca. My mother had received a commission to sculpt a head of Mr. Trumiance. With that money she took us kids for her to live her dream which was going to Feria in Seville, seeing the Prado museum and then on to Florence to see the Uffizi and other famous museums in Rome. Our second stop and last was Tangiers. We made friends with people on the boat and we all piled in a cab until we could drive no further and walk through the Arab casba to a tiny little hotel. My littlest sister was still in diapers and my other sister was 5. We got into the hotel room and my mother asked for help from the maid. She sent me out to buy a bottle of wine as she stayed with the kids in the hotel room. I bought a bottle of Moroccan wine that was so dark it was almost black in color. We had nothing to open the bottle with. She called the maid in the hotel who knew exactly hot to open the bottle. She took a diaper and wrapped it around the bottom of the bottle and began knocking it against the wall until the cork came out! I just saw an article suggesting a shoe on the bottle is an excellent way to do it too. Next time you don’t have a cork screw just take off your shoe put it on the bottom of the bottle and keep hitting it against the wall until the cork come out. It is a great trick to know!
