Our community in Arden Delaware was created by a group of politicians and artists. They bought two farms One from Mr. Harvey and one from Mr. Grub. There was a stream running along the Edge of both properties. The stream had an old swimming hole that became our community meeting point. In the beginning the village was just settled as a summer vacation spot. Little by little it also became a year round community. My family was one of the first. Our house was right beside the swimming pool. In summer we kids always hung out at the pool. Even our present vice president hung out at the pool. In winter every thanks giving we would hope that the pool would freeze over because so we could all go ice skating. With us young kids Mr. Broadbent would practice his figure skating while we skirted around him playing tag or trying to play ice hockey. In the evening the boys would start a campfire. We would put our skate blades to the fire to warm up our feet. When we skated it would leave tracks in the ice. Our parents and friends would often go skinny dipping at 12 AM with a group of friends in the light of a full moon. At night I remember waking up hearing people laughing in the pool. More people moved into the community from outside. With them came their outside ways. The pool was deemed too dirty to swim in as it wasn’t purified water. Finally the pool was closed. With the closing of the pool our community center was lost. Even today 50 years later the new pool often doesn’t have kids playing in it. People come from outside the village. The village children are seen looking through the fence on the outside of the pool.
