Before I got married I was living with my boyfriend who later became my husband. He was in charge of teaching all the young diplomats and young recruits into the CIA how to write for Washington. They were very different styles. The state department analyzes whatever they saw and the CIA just reported what they saw as raw data. I found the CIA guys a lot more fun as they normally got into the culture of the country where they were assigned and the state department guys were boring as hell as they just plane didn’t talk being afraid they might divulge a national secret. As we were not married my husband didn’t tell me how all this worked. He came home one day and said you got me into all kinds of trouble. You blew the cover of a CIA informant. I had no idea of course as I wasn’t privy to any of the information. All I know is I got hell for something that I didn’t know what I did to cause it. Being around these young men who my husband was training did give me some incite. After the March 11 terrorist attacks in Spain the Spanish government sent out Irish military to be spies on the foreigners living in Spain. I had read that in the news paper and didn’t think much about it until one arrived in the little village where I was living. There was a Dutch Diplomat there and a close friend. We liked the guy as I mentioned before he got into the culture of the location. Finally he did tell me why he was there as he was an intelligence agent. My Dutch friend was furious as he knew that the Irish man was just trying to get work. By saying we could be dangerous.Tthe Irish spy thought he would get more work. Instead he got fired! The Dutchman’s hobby was growing flowers and mine was playing guitar and training horses. Neither of us are a threat to society. Even so as my husband taught me any woman who travels a lot is considered a threat by all governments. I keep having all these cute young men trying to get me into bed. Most are not smart enough to play the part they have been assigned. At least it is entertaining to me.
