Reading the paper recently the word Oligarchy has come up. Not knowing what that means I looked it up on the internet. It basically means that it is a government ruled by the elite or rich and powerful. I don’t really know if our government has changed that much but people are saying that the USA is no longer a democracy but an oligarchy. As I didn’t understand the meaning I read some more articles. Here is an excerpt from a study done by Princeton and Northwestern University printed in the Telegraph.nTLLearn chinese in shanghai,Learn mandarin, Mandaringarden

“Researchers concluded that US government policies rarely align with the preferences of the majority of Americans, but do favor special interests and lobbying organizations: "When a majority of citizens disagrees with economic elites and/or with organized interests, they generally lose. Moreover, because of the strong status quo bias built into the US political system, even when fairly large majorities of Americans favor policy change, they generally do not get it."nTLLearn chinese in shanghai,Learn mandarin, Mandaringarden

When studying civics in high school, we were taught that the US government is extremely cumbersome to get anything done. It was purposely structured that way so we couldn’t change anything. After traveling around world managing an orchestra without a conductor it made me think twice about having a democratic process. Rehearsals took twice as long and often fights would break out as we didn’t have a leader. If we had had a conductor there would be no discussion and all of us could have gone home a lot earlier. It would have meant the rank and file wouldn’t argue among themselves but would just be angry at the conductor which would have made for a healthy tour. It is just food for thought.nTLLearn chinese in shanghai,Learn mandarin, Mandaringarden
