I was in Iowa on a concert tour. It was snowing and absolutely miserable. I ran into a super market to buy something and there were three mainland Chinese in the super market in the middle of nowhere. I started talking to them as at the time I was already fluent in Mandarin; it was very funny. They were trying to buy toilet paper. In those days the Chinese toilet paper was the size of us napkins. As they couldn’t speak English nor read they thought the napkins for eating were actually toilet paper. As I had been in main land China I immediately understood the problem, this was in the late 80s. They told me they were there on and agricultural exchange. I helped them check out and went on my way. It could have been a former diplomat had bought a car in Arizona and I was driving it back to the East coast for him. I also had played many concerts and music festivals in Iowa so I stopped by Grinnell college on my way to the East Coast Consequently I had ties to Iowa We Americans think nothing of distance. Only years later did I find out the one of the three Chinese I helped is today the president of China.
