In the village of Monroy even into the 70s Tere’s mother was the washer woman and her father was the local blacksmith- horse doctor. Listening to the stories of Monroy I’m learning new tricks to me but old to everyone in the village. Tere’s mother would collect the Laundry from the rich families. She carried it on a big basket to the public Fountain called La Amapola or poppy. There she washed it between two stones with a soap that was made from Left over oil and lye. Today (Tere’s still makes this for the village.) Whenever she had a spot on the clothing she couldn’t remove, she put it in the sun to dry. If the spot wasn’t bleached out by the sun the first time, she wet it again and let it dry. She would continue this process until the spot was gone. We use fancy spot removers and bleach; she just used the sun. Once the clothes were dry she put it in her basket on top of her head and walked the 5 kilometers back into town. When I first went to Spain I knew how to wash my underwear and which button to push on the electric washing machine. When I got to Spain my landlady handed me my sheets to wash in a scrub board basin. All the women looked down in the patio from seven stories up laughing at me as they had never seen a young lady who did know how to wash by hand. They taught me how to go around the edges of the sheet using the scrub board. Then they showed me how little by little to go towards the center until the sheet was completely scrubbed on the scrub board. This took me at least an hour; all the while all the women were laughing hysterically at me. We have all come a long way. There are no more wash women in the village and I of course never washed a sheet by hand again. Now we all have washing machines!
