The New York Philharmonic is known for being a difficult orchestra and being particularly negative about everything. If a young positive musician joined the orchestra it would only take a few months until that musician became as bitter as his colleagues. The famous conductor Lorin Maazel was very talented as a young boy. He won a conducting competition at a very young age. Besides a cash prize, one of the prizes was to conduct the New York philharmonic. He was only 12 or 13 at the time or maybe even younger. During the first rehearsal when he gave the first down beat the entire orchestra pulled out lollipops and started sucking them!
I saw a Benefit concert in Philadelphia of the violinist Isaac Perlman. My husband had been best man at his wedding so there was a long friendship. We had been given complimentary tickets in the prestige’s boxes or sponsors seats. That night was a baseball game at exactly the same time. Many of the musicians at the back of the orchestra are not playing all the time. Each time someone hit a home room we could see one musician telling another until the results were told Isaac who was sitting in the front of course. The performance was a bit lacking until the game was over. Fortunately, he was still playing when that happened and it was a wonderfully performance. He obviously hit the jack pot!
While at the Casals festival orchestra Zubin Mehta was the conductor. He had grown up with my sister’s husband so we also had a long connection. One day he arrived at the rehearsal and when he opened up the score to start the concert some had put play boy magazine on top of the score opened to the centerfold. He was proud and often memorized his scores but the score was there and this time it was a picture of a blond nude!
