I took a freighter to Europe when I was 18 years old. Kennedy had been assassinated and Johnson had just gotten us into the Vietnam War. All my friends were being drafted which did sit very well musicians who needed their hands to play not kill. As I had lived in Spain I knew how to earn a living there and always thought when I got into trouble I could go back. Things got really bad in states not only in society but at my college. The youth were getting heavily into drugs, my teacher was bad and only was trying to get me into bed eve time I went to class. My reaction was to hop a German coal freighter to Europe. Once I need a group of friends also followed. The coal freighter left from Newport News Virginia. When I got there it once again was delayed as they cleaned the boat after filling it with coal. There was only one other girl on the boat so we shared a room. One day the captain had a fire drill. We all had to put on life jackets and all the houses were unrolled. It was like a laurel and hardy comedy. The hoses were so old they all had holes and they would turn and twist like snakes spraying the captain who was fat a pompous. The next as everyone was sleeping the waiter went yelling and running up stairs to the helm. All the crew was drunk and we were heading straight into and oil tanker that must have had a similar scenario. Freda the waiter saved the day and swerved the ship in another direction. We just missed each other by a stone’s throw. That was my first adventure when I thought I was 18 and could do whatever I wanted!
