In Spain it used to be the custom to have just one or two outfits of extremely high quality. They might have worn the same outfit everyday for a week. Normally it was tailor made. When I went to Taiwan the Taiwanese women wore a different outfit every day. Often I would see friends over a year’s period and they never wore the same thing twice. While I lived in Taiwan we took a whole pantry just to hang my clothes that I never wore. This is a difference in society and a difference in world economy. At the time Spain was extremely poor the goal was to look rich. Their idea of rich was high quality. That has changed over the years. Spain is still a leader in clothing styles as can be seen by the stores Desigual and Zara both of which are all over China. The Taiwanese had also been poor. To demonstrate they were no longer poor they used quantity as opposed to Quality. Since the Taiwanese changed their clothing so much the city I lived in was just full of clothing stores everywhere. There were two main department stores one catering to the upper class and one for the lower class. Often the goods were the same price only the presentation of the clothing was different. The upper class store had very wide aisles and few people and the lower class store had aisles that everyone rubbed elbows while shopping. Both stores were owned by the same man. He just knew his market. Both stores were equally successful economically. The two stores were as different as the customs in different countries. Clothing concepts can be either quality or quantity. Today worldwide quantity seems to be the norm.
