The little village of Monroy on the Portuguese border was completely dependent on horses and donkeys until 1977. The Spaniard who was the local for the US agriculture division at the US embassy told me he used to ride 40 kilometers once a week to get the mail. He grew up in the same region. I had a hard time believing him until I entered into this unspoiled territory. The little town has only organic meat because they were so behind. Now they have learned that it is desirable so they continue what they have always done. As most of the people here in town grew up riding to town on a horse or in a carriage it is not a novelty. It is seen as poverty. They don’t want anything to do with it. Being a foreigner and intrigued with something new I was just about the only person around this little town that enjoys going riding and had the romantic notion of an outing in a horse carriage. The local horse breeder couldn’t find anyone but me to go with him on Sundays when all his employees were gone to go out in the carriage. I had no idea carriage driving is one of the most dangerous sports you can get involved with. It is nothing like riding a horse. One Sunday the farmer enticed me to accompany him saying we would go on a pick nick. What he really wanted was to train his horses and it is too dangerous to do alone Off we went half way into town one of the reigns got caught on one of the buckles. The farmer didn’t have the right equipment and tied things together with whatever was around the farm. The horse panicked and the next thing we knew we were in a ditch with the carriage just starting to fall on top of us. Just at that moment a man drove by in his car and grabbed the carriage as it was falling. We scrambled out as fast as we could. The horse was so distraught we had to walk 7 kilometer back to the farm. That was a typical example of Sundays with Ramon.
