I arrived in Siena with my American guitar teacher. My parents had some Italian Clients in Milan who had arranged for me to stay with a family in Siena while I was studying at the Accademia Chigiana. My parents had fallen on hard times and didn’t have the finances to send me or accompany me. They guided me to apply for a scholarship which I got and found me Sr. Roncucci who had a daughter Maria who was my age to live with. It never occurred to my parents that language would be a problem. Here I arrived without a single word of Italian and Sr. Roncucci didn’t know a single word of English. It never occurred to me to buy a dictionary or study the language. I was 14 years old. I just did whatever I could to communicate and so did Sra. Roncucci. She was very upset with me as I arrived before the other tenet left. She put an extra bed in her room where she was sleeping as well as her daughter. I was made part of the family and expected to behave like the rest of the family. The first thing she did was try to get me to sleep the siesta. In America we don’t sleep the siesta; in the heat of Tuscany everyone slept the siesta. I had nothing to do so I would just play my guitar. Well that wasn’t proper behavior as siesta time is sleeping time and I was disturbing everyone. At wits end she sat me down on the edge of the bed with a great big water glass of red wine and made me drink it. I have slept the siesta ever since!
