In the opera world it is taken for granted that you have coach no matter how famous you are. In many other professions this is not the custom. It is extremely hard to see one’s self no matter what your profession. For some reason in other professions we seem to skip this process. Human beings are social animals. As psychologists have known for years sometimes just talking about something resolves the problem. The mere fact of talking about any problem or skill makes us focus on that subject at the moment and we resolve it ourselves. In the process of explaining it to another we have resolved the situation, Coaching is similar. As it is hard to see ourselves by ourselves; the custom of having a friend or a coach to hear your ideas or your art is invaluable. I’ve heard some great artists that had terrible performances only because they needed a coach. I presented an American guitarist in Taiwan. He is an extremely talented opera singer-classical guitarist. As I had seen him in performance in the USA I told him I would hire him only if he did what I said. He used to always change guitars just before a performance because he was unsure of himself or change the program and play something that had worked in the past but he had not practiced for this performance. This is a common problem for everyone. I was ruthless and didn’t let him change the program or the guitar. The result was he was the most successful artist we presented over a two year period. Getting coaching for anything helps us be much more successful than if we do everything alone.
