The little village where I grew up was started by artists and politicians. My mother was an artist and had traveled all over South America with my father right after they got married. They had acquired beautiful hand woven materials from many different countries. As we were growing up my mother would dress us in these hand woven materials. I had been studying in Spain and returned to the United States to go to College. I was also feeling a bit home sick or I would have stayed in Spain where the education in my field was better. I got a scholarship and rented a little studio apartment on 6th street. As it was customary for everyone to drink wine with the meals in Spain I took the habit back with me to the USA. In the sixties everyone was dressing in ethnic clothing. As I had been raised that way I didn’t even notice as my mother had made me lots of clothes out of the woven materials they had brought back from South America. One day I went in the liquor store to by a bottle of Sherry. I was under age of course but only by a couple months as that time the drinking age in New York was 18. I walked into the store and asked for a bottle of sherry. My Dutch Roommate and I used to always have a glass of sherry and a grilled squid before lunch. When I walked into the liquor store the owner said get out of here you hippy. I looked around to see who he was talking to. He was talking to me. I didn’t know what a hippy was. The next day I asked my class mates what was a hippy. Apparently because I was wearing some ethic clothing I was considered a hippy!!
