There are many theories of how to write Chinese Characters. My purpose of learning to write them
was to be able to look up words on my phone by writing them in the character recognition program.
Another reason was to leave notes or write an address where I’m going so a taxi can read it. My third
reason is Chinese character look like works of art to me. I now can do all of this. It took me approximately
a year to learn to do that. Writing Chinese characters is easiest if you use miao hong paper. It is the
same system an artist uses to enlarge a drawing. You fit the character in part of the lined paper. It didn’t
occur to me that was what it was for until I already learned more or less how to write. I learned printing
not script as my goal was just to be understood. I used the study of Chinese character to learn to draw.
As my mother was an artist it never occurred to me that the miao hong paper was used to teach
proportions etc. When I first started the top of a charter would be too big and take up too much room in
the little squares. Eventually , I got my eye and hand to be coordinated.
It is a whole lot easier to use the miao hong than learning to draw!
